A DC Brake chopper is an equipment based on static switches (semiconductors) for applying a DC voltage given to its input terminals to a resistive element inside it, in a pulsed manner. The manner (activation condition, period, duty cycle, and duration) of applying the pulses depends on the specific application. They are mostly used together with motor drives, in order to provide braking to the motor. The braking action for a motor drive using DC chopper is achieved by dissipating the motor’s kinetic energy being transferred to the driver’s capacitor, on resistors as heat.
